Historical Home Sells Bourne Mansion

January 23, 2010

Bourne SF MansionThose who are familiar with the Bourne Family from Filoli will miss this historical home in San Francisco (2550 Webster Street) which was sold at auction and closed December 23, 2009 for $2.79 million. Sure looks like the Disneyland Haunted Mansion doesn’t it.

The Road To The Alpine Inn, My Favorite Historical Place

My favorite place of all is to relax and meet friends at the Alpine Inn, formerly called Rissotti’s or “Zott’s”…

Of course, I am partial since my dear friend and my other dear Mother own the place. But, if you just want a beer/wine/soft drink it is a great place to just be yourself and hang-out. If you want a great burger, chicken or other this is the place. The fries are great too! This is why this place is on my main page as one of the historical homes that I love. You can  just imagine as you drive up, the horses that used to come and tie up there… I have met many wonderful people there.

As of 2009, Zotts has enjoyed 150 years as Portola Valley’s hotspot…

A lot of history has passed through here… Zott’s is unique, it is the only Beergarden that has stayed one since it’s existence.

San Carlos Trail

January 3, 2010

Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve Trail
Pulgas trail
One of my New Year’s resolutioins is to start walking more and enjoy the beautiful environment that we live in.

This 293-acre Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve is located near the intersection of I-280 and Edgewood Road, just outside of San Carlos.
Plants and Animals: Mixed woodland Oaks and Laurel trees cover much of the Preserve, while the hilltop is a mix of grasses and remnant non-native plants such as oleander, eucalyptus and cactus.

On clear days you can see views of San Francisco Bay, the southern peninsula and south bay cities, and the peaks of Mount Diablo and Mount Hamilton. This is one of a few Open Space Preserves to allow dogs. Bicycles and equestrians are permitted on the Cordilleras and Hassler Trails. The Hetch-Hetchy aqueduct passes through the Preserve in an underground tunnel.

Polly Geraci Trail (hiking only) winds along the Cordilleras streambed and meets the paved Hassler Trail on the 650 foot hilltop. The Blue Oak Trail begins just past the private Redwood Center and climbs through oaks to meet the paved trail around the 450 foot elevation. Constructing a loop of the Cordilleras, Polly Geraci, Hassler and Blue Oak Trails constitutes about 3 miles.

Exit I-280 at Edgewood Road and turn east, towards San Carlos. At Crestview, turn left, and another quick left turn at Edmonds Rd. You’ll see the Cordilleras trailhead just to the right of the entrance to the private Redwood Center on the right hand side of the road. A little further, you’ll find a roadside pullout on your left and the Blue Oak trailhead on your right.

WATER DOG LAKE LOOP TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS

December 9, 2009

The City of Belmont is working in partnership with local volunteers to realign the Water Dog Lake Loop Trail. The improvements will make the trail easier for hikers to navigate, especially during wet weather. There is an existing trail that goes around the lake, but it was built below the high water mark which makes it diffi cult to pass in spots, even for hiking. Thanks to a diligent group of volunteers andBelmont Parks and Recreation staff, the new trail will be a minimum of 15 feet above the waterline of Water Dog Lake, which will allow year round use. The existing trail along the far west end of the lake will be re-vegetated to improve the quality of the wetlands. In addition to realignment, the project includes four small bike/pedestrian bridges, which will assist users to cross drainages and the spillway.

So far volunteers have finished realigning half of the trail, but the remaining half and the bridges need additional work. When the realignment is completed the trail will be above the high water mark, and wide enough for strollers, which will make it a great destination for hiking, biking, and family outings.

To volunteer and help finish the improvements contact: Passion Trail Bikes Belmont Parks and Recreation 650-620-9798, 650-595-7441 or email patty@passiontrailbikes.com parksrec@belmont.gov

December 8, 2009

Hi everyone, due to the seating of a new City Council at the December 8th City Council meeting, the City of Belmont will be rescheduling the 3rd Annual presentation of our Beautiful Belmont Awards Program to the meeting of January 12th. This recognition program is designed to acknowledge individuals, businesses, and community groups who have enhanced the City’s community by making significant exterior improvements to their Belmont properties. The Good Eats Of San Carlos

San Carlos has been dubbed the “The City of Good Living” for a reason! It’s got a bustling downtown that still maintains a small-town feel and abounds with spots that tempt and tantalize the taste buds. Foodies rejoice, as this Weekly explores the diverse eateries on SC’s Laurel Street!

Amy B starts us off with some midday pastrami at The Refuge. “It’s like butter. It just melts into a tiny burst of heaven in your mouth. It’s got the proper proportions of sauerkraut and dressing. I am freakin’ picky about my rye bread too, but they’ve got it down pat!” Meanwhile, David P heads over to Gracie’s Delectables to gobble up their “extremely moist, fresh turkey sandwiches served on house-made oatmeal rolls.” And Dan B gets comfy at Mack’s BBQ, where the “pulled pork is perfection – tangy and tender with just the right amount of crispy bits. The cornbread was moist and crumbly; the beans had a hint of molasses and smokiness, plus nice little bits of onion. I overate, but it was worth it.” We bet it was!For  an “outstanding” brunch, Richard H is all about Rumi: “The food is imaginative and very well delivered. We had the smoked salmon with poached eggs over potatoes and the short-rib hash. Wow!” Living up to its name, Spasso offers a truly enjoyable dining experience, causing Mace M to proclaim that “the specials are actually special, and delicious. There’s a reason we keep coming back, and you should join us.” Still, if you plan to go to Town, save room for the signature bread pudding, “one of the best” Tarra R has ever had: “The bread melted in my mouth and the caramel buttery sauce that accompanied it was dreamy.”Keeping things sugar-coated, you can always treat yourself to a cone at Cowabunga Creamery, where Art Agets scooped off his feet by the ooey gooey “rivers of chocolate fudge.” To further seduce your sweet tooth, blast off to Vanilla Moon Bakery, known for “the best cupcake on the Peninsula” in Patrick H’s book. In case you need more convincing, he informs us that “the owner was the former pastry chef at Chez Panisse.”

I am the very fortunate neighbor of some of these enterprises. YUM!

BETHLEHEM A.D. REDWOOD CITY

December 2, 2009

Bethlehem Panoramic
Image by betta design via Flickr

THIS IS AN AWESOME EVENT. A MUST SEE TO ENJOY THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS!

(Of course, this is a picture of the real Bethlehem)

This event is free for the entire family. Bring warm clothes since you can park your car (recommended) and walk through Bethlehem. It can get chilly. There is a drive though for disabled on one night.

Visit on December 21, 22, and 23… 6:00 – 9:30 p.m.

1305 Middlefield Road in Redwood City

This event is in it’s 16th year is a living recreation of living in the village of Bethlehem on the night of the first Christmas.

Children especially love seeing the live sheep, camels, llamas, Brahma bulls, and donkeys wandering through the village.  If you are careful, you might even spot the Three Wise men as they carry their gifts in search of the newborn King.

Outside the village, visitors waiting for their turn to enter, can choose to listen to an audio tape (in English and in Spanish) explaining the historical context of the original Christmas.  The mood outside BETHLEHEM A.D. is as lively as within the village walls.  Roman centurions mingle with Redwood City police to help direct traffic as Bethlehem villagers mingle with modern-day sojourners standing in line.  Searchlights crisscross the night sky, pointing the way to the manger.  Music fills the air and a sense of joy and anticipation permeates the entire city block, as well as a deep sense of community uniting people of diverse cultural, religious, and economic backgrounds.

After leaving Bethlehem, visitors receive a Certificate of Pilgrimage and can choose to cross the street to Peninsula Christian Center where free refreshments (hot coffee, cider, and homemade doughnuts) are served on the festively lit patio.  The church sanctuary is warm and inviting, allowing for personal reflection about the experience, with a live video feed of the manger and village.  Traditional Christmas carols are sung between times of prayer and reflection.  The community room is alive with children and families enjoying refreshments and fellowship.

For anyone searching for the real meaning of Christmas, the answer can be found within the walls of BETHLEHEM A.D.  Once you make you first pilgrimage to BETHLEHEM A.D., you will find that this journey will become one of your most cherished Christmas traditions!
