Train Ride 10-2 Memorial Day

May 31, 2010

This San Caros neighbor has train rides for the kiddies and families in the neighborhood. The train just goes around his home. The kids just love it. I was glad to be able to actually see this in action today.

The gentleman does this throughout the year on different occasions. His garage actually looks like a train depot with San Carlos written on it. Very cool!

Greening Your Home Room-by-Room

April 20, 2010

Making your home more energy efficient and environmentally friendly can be as easy as making simple changes to each room/area of your house, including your kitchen, laundry room, bedroom, bathroom, and landscaping. Making small alterations to these areas can add up to big savings!

What Is A Green Home?

April 14, 2010

Although certifications are necessary to officially designate a home “green,” anyone can make their home and their lives greener. A home’s individual green features are what make it environmentally friendly or “greener.” An environmentally friendly home is a home that—compared with a standard home—uses less energy, water, and natural resources; creates less waste; and is healthier for its inhabitants. Homes can be built green-conscious, or they can undergo green enhancements (eco-conscious alterations or remodels) after they are created.

A home that is eco-friendly should encompass one or all of the five key green principles outlined below and should:
*  Conserve natural resources
*  Use energy efficiently
*  Have improved indoor air quality relative to normal building standards
*  Create less waste to build and live relative to normal building standards
*  Be part of a livable community

The home pictured above,  Coachella Valley’s first LEED®-(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified home, includes features that will result in a 75 percent water savings and a 30 percent savings on a typical electric or gas bill. Additional features: ENERGY STAR appliances; efficient glass; extra insulation; paperless drywall; solar electricity; special high-efficiency HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning); a “fresh-air exchange” system that prevents stale air from being kept inside the house; drought-friendly landscaping and regionally native plants; tank-less water heaters in the house and casita; and water-saving faucets and toilets.

Alpine Inn in Portola Valley

April 12, 2010

Whether you want a quick workout or a leisurely spin, The Loop in Palo Alto has you covered. This popular road bike route has several iterations; the Alpine Innone we recommend is relatively short, not too demanding, and suitable for novice or advanced riders. No road bike? Rent one at Bike Connection for $35 (a bit steep, but the wheels are yours for 24 hours). The 18-mile loop passes the Stanford campus, vaunted venture-capital companies on Sand Hill Road, and multimillion-dollar estates. The most-scenic stretches are west of I-280 in the less-trafficked towns of Woodside and Portola Valley. Those on a leisurely pace can make a pit stop at the historic Alpine Inn, two-thirds of the way through the ride; at more than 150 years old, this roadhouse beer garden is one of the Peninsula’s longestrunning businesses. Finish with a mad dash or a slow ram! Either way works close for the loop.

I am prejudiced of course, since I used to fly with Geri, who helps her Mom (Molly) run the place.

Red poppy flower, side view

Hey all,

What beautiful weather we are having. I just love it. Driving down Arroyo and all the trees in blossom. Then  headin on Brittan and the rows of tress all in blossom. Priceless. Flowers, blossoms and more. Oh yeah! I am not partial to this picture, but I do love the red poppies.
