Sequoia Update on New Gymansium
July 20, 2010
I was at Sequoia, viewing the new gymansium that is being built. Construction started in Janurary.
The new gym will feature a tournament basketball court, a tournament volleyball court, two practice basketball courts and 16 badminton courts as well as dressing rooms and an area for food concessions and booster sales.
The new facility has been designed to qualify for certification as a LEED Gold Building, one of the highest nationally recognized sustainability standards for green design.
Saving more than 50 percent of the baseline energy costs of current California energy standards, the new building will be constructed with wood products from renewable forests, a high-efficiency HVAC system supplemented with natural ventilation, and a groundwater system that utilizes redirected storm water. Wherever possible, rapidly renewable or recycled materials will be chosen over conventional alternatives.
A prominent skylight – running the full length of the main gymnasium – will flood the main space with indirect natural light during the day, resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption year-round. The entire sloped roofing system will be lined with a direct-applied photovoltaic film that will generate over 50 percent of the energy consumed by the building.
The project also includes two athletic plazas, a 200-square-foot ticket kiosk, and a new front entrance onto James Avenue. The school’s two existing gyms will also be refurbished as part of the project.
Cody Anderson Wasney Architects, Palo Alto, is the architectural firm spearheading the project, and W. L. Butler Construction, Inc., Redwood City, is the general contractor. Awesome!
Sequoia New Gymnasium in the Works
June 26, 2010
| Beginning with May 19 and through June 16, the James Street parking lot at Sequoia High School will be partially blocked due to construction of the new gymnasium. The stretch of the driveway from the front of the new gym and around the bend facing the current gym will be blocked by a large crane. The parking lot is still available for parking, but be aware that there may be congestion.
Awesome undertaking…. lucky kids. |
Belmont Historical Home…
March 4, 2010
Ok, this has been going on for a long…………time. Does anyone have an update for me……
The Pre-Construction Meeting for the Emmett House Project took place on July 14th. During this meeting the contractor representatives, designers and members from Police, Community Development, Public Works, Belmont/San Carlos Fire and Mid-Peninsula Water District discussed key issues associated with the project. Currently, City staff and designers are in the process of reviewing multiple submittals with special emphasis given on exterior color selection. City staff also met with City arborist to receive recommendations on tree protection. The Notice to Proceed will be issued on July 27th. Contract construction time will begin on August 3rd with contractor mobilization which shall include providing temporary power, storage equipment, fence installation and erosion control measures. Contract construction time is 260 working days.
New Bike Path in Belmont
December 27, 2009
The City of Belmont will commence construction of and bicycle overcrossing of US 101 in spring of 2010. The proposed overcrossing will allow bicyclists and pedestrians to cross the freeway on a trail and bridge that is completely separate from the roadway. The trail begins at Hiller Street and Ralston Avenue, crosses the freeway just to the north of Ralston Avenue, and connects to the Bay Trail at the Belmont Sports Complex.
The project has received funding from the American Recovery Reinvestment Act (stimulus money) and SAFETEA-LU, the State, the Bay Areas Air QualityManagement District, and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The City has secured grants from many sources due to the projects merit and support that it has received. The result is that the use of City of Belmont funds for this project is unusually low, at less than ten percent. The project will not only improve and encourage pedestrian and bicyclist use, it will create jobs for the region and encourage the economic recovery.
The project has been in the planning phases for many years, and there was extensive public outreach and community input in its development. The curved appearance of the bridge railing is even inspired by drawings completed by Belmont school children.
