Seniors Being Targeted Lottery Scam
December 3, 2011
This is very scary and could happen to any of our family members or friends. Please take the time to talk to your seniors that are close to you. On December 1, in the middle of the afternoon at the San Carlos Trader Joe’s, a woman in her 70’s was returning to her vehicle after shopping at Trader Joe’s in San Carlos. She was approached by two Hispanic males who offered to let her take part in a large draw from a winning lottery ticket if she would give them some good faith money. Although hesitant, the lady was coerced into the vehicle driven by both suspects and taken to her home in Redwood City. The victim went into her home and retrieved a large amount of cash and gave it to the suspects. She was then driven to the corner of El Camino Real & Madison Ave. in Redwood City where she was dropped off and the suspects drove away. The victim called her daughter to pick her up and told her what happened. They then reported the crime to the Sheriff’s Office.
The suspects are described as follows:
#1 – Hispanic male 60-70 years old, 5’5”-5’7” tall, stocky build, wearing glasses
#2 – Hispanic male 20-25 years old, 6’0”-6’4” tall, thin build, short black hair
Suspect vehicle – White full size newer model van with a sliding door and windows that wrap around the entire vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to make families aware of this type of crime that frequently targets elders.
Families are encouraged to talk to their seniors about these types of predators and the warning signs that they are being victimized.
Honoring September 11 and Our Heros!
September 10, 2011
| Dear Americans,So this Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the September 11th tragedy, we will take a moment
to remember those who lost their lives and the bravery and self-sacrifice so many showed that day and beyond. We continue to mourn the innocent lives lost and remain in awe of the heroic efforts of those both on the ground and in the air who gave their all in hopes of saving others. |

| While our country was shaken in the wake of the attacks, Americans collectively chose not to fall victim to the actions of others. Rather, we rallied together with purpose to rebuild, help those affected, and
strengthened our commitment to the values which are uniquely American. We knew this, above all, was the ultimate weapon to defeat the terrorists. It remains so today. Regardless of whether you were personally connected with someone who perished in this tragedy, we were all impacted by this unforgettable event. So this Sunday, as we honor the 10-year anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, we will take a moment to remember those who lost their lives and the bravery and self-sacrifice so many showed that day and beyond. This great country has faced seemingly insurmountable challenges through its history, yet the perseverance and confidence of the American people have always led to brighter days. It is our nature as Americans, and why our country has, and will always, be an example for so many around the world.

San Carlos will pay new firefighters 7.5 percent less
July 13, 2011
The San Carlos City Council has agreed to pay firefighters who join the city‘s new department in October an average of 7.5 percent less than current ones. Well, I guess because they are new-bees and we are trying to protect our city and cut costs. A good way to start a job though.
In May the council decided to pay new firefighters 5 percent less, but on Monday night it voted 4-1, with Bob Grassilli dissenting, to cut the pay even more. The 2.5 percent difference in salary will save San Carlos an additional $75,000 a year, according to city officials.
San Carlos’ fire service costs should drop from $7.1 million a year to $6,078,107 after its joint department with Belmont dissolves in October and is replaced by a “hybrid” agency run by Redwood City, said administrative services director Rebecca Mendenhal. San Carlos chose to go its separate way several months ago after Belmont refused to pay a larger share of operating expenses.
In addition to paying firefighters lower salaries, San Carlos expects to save money by shedding its own command structure and avoiding some duplicative equipment expenses.
Firefighters hired to work for the new department will receive an average base salary of $85,092, among the lowest on the Peninsula, according to a city analysis.
Grassilli said he voted against a 7.5 percent salary drop because he fears firefighters would bolt to higher paying departments as soon as they get a chance.
I want to thank those that are willing to even be in this job with the risks and what they have to go through… I for one and grateful.
Belmont Tightens Up with Seat Belts
May 22, 2011
Beginning Monday, the Belmont Police Department will launch intensive enforcement of seat belt laws as part of a national “Click It or Ticket” campaign.
A first-time ticket costs — at a minimum — $142, and at least $445 for a child under 16, according to the Police Department.
More than 140 local law enforcement agencies as well as the California Highway Patrol are participating in the campaign, which starts Monday and continues through June 5.
Passengers riding in a car at night are among those least likely to buckle up, police say, which makes them the most likely to die in crashes when unrestrained. Nationally, of those killed in nighttime crashes in 2009, 62 percent were not wearing a seat belt. Due to that fact, Belmont police say they will focus their efforts at night.
Authorities say California’s current seat belt use rate is at an all time high at 96.2 percent, which is due in part to the Click It or Ticket mobilization. The campaign is credited with increasing the state’s adult seat belt usage from 92.5 percent in 2005 to 96.2 percent in 2011.
In 2009, seat belts saved approximately 12,713 lives nationwide. In California, it’s estimated that 320 people who were killed in 2009 would be alive today if they had been wearing seat belts, police say.
California’s Click It or Ticket campaign is paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Save your life and your money, buckel up!
Fire Services Dissolving for San Carlos and Belmont
May 4, 2011
The Belmont and San Carlos Fire Department as we know it now will dissolve on October 12. Both cities are very unique in their needs for fire services. Each city will be working to implement a new fire department for themselves. No agreement could be made to keep them together.

Gee, Subway Robbery??? Anyone Saw Anything?
January 27, 2010
Hard to believe that last night, Belmont PD officers were called to Subway Sandwiches at 1602 El Camino Real on the report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. Though this investigation is ongoing, the following is known at this time:
Two men, both about 5’7″ tall with medium builds, wearing dark blue or black hooded sweatshirts, dark masks and dark colored pants robbed the sandwich shop, taking money from the cash register. A female customer inside the shop was also robbed of her purse. One of the men was armed with a silver revolver, and both fled the area on foot.
Officers scoured the area and passed along critical suspect information to surrounding law enforcement agencies.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Belmont PD investigators at

Home Security Questions…
July 20, 2009

(ARA) – Protecting your home and your family is a top priority. From apartment to mansion, a home security system can give you the piece of mind to know your loved ones and your home is safe, whether you’re asleep upstairs or on the other side of the world.
Alarming Statistics
In 2007 burglary offenses cost victims an estimated $4.3 billion in lost property, according to the FBI. Overall, the average dollar loss per burglary offense was $1,991. A home security system can help deter break-ins and keep your family safe – not only from thieves, but also from fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Affordable Peace of Mind
With an array of devices to detect motion, note changes in room temperature, and notify both neighbors and a professional monitoring company, home security systems provide all the tools you need to protect your home and loved ones — and they may be more affordable than you realize.
Find the Right Company
When you’re ready to buy an alarm, talk to a few different home security companies before having anything installed. They will conduct risk assessments to determine what your security challenges are and how to address them.

All About Retirement….
July 15, 2009

(ARA) – The U.S. dollar continues to decline in value and fears about inflation are growing faster than previously expected. In a short period of time, Americans have lost trillions from their investment portfolios and retirement accounts, thus many are looking for a safe investment in a difficult economy.
For centuries, gold has been a reliable and solid investment, and since 2001, the value of gold has increased 300 percent. Investors who want to protect their hard-earned wealth from the floundering stock market, fluctuating dollar and uncertainty of real estate are flocking to gold because it’s a safe-haven asset with a solid history of wealth preservation and profit.
Some of the advantages of investing in gold include:
- While gold does not earn interest, the price appreciation could more than make up for it.
- Gold production cannot match demand, causing the price to increase due to lower supply.
- Gold funds have reached historic highs in recent years and are still climbing.
- Economic forces that affect other assets are different than those determining the price of gold. Gold helps reduce risk in your investment portfolio.
- Gold can easily be converted to cash.
Short-term
“Investors seeking short-term profit should look into modern-day gold bullion products,” says John Halloran, senior advisor at the Certified Gold Exchange — North America’s premier precious metals trading platform. “When mainstream investments like stocks and bonds aren’t doing well, many investors choose to diversify into bullion products. Bullion is a debt-free, physical possession asset that you own outright and has a low premium.”
Long-term
“Long-term, preservation-seeking investors should consider certified gold coins,” says Halloran. “Certified gold coins have historically proven to profit at higher ratios than bullion, while at the same time their non-government confiscation status leaves investors with peace of mind and instant liquidity during the worst of times.
The Certified Gold Exchange only buys and sells the most widely traded bullion bars, bullion coins and certified gold coins with free next day delivery to your door. They do not deal with stocks or exchange-traded funds, so there is less risk involved. Their Economic Research Team has over 40 years experience analyzing economic factors and their effects on gold; account representatives are all certified and will work with you to find the investment product that’s right for your situation.
Visit CertifiedGoldExchange.com to request your free 2009 Gold Starters Kit, which could help protect your investment portfolio and retirement account. Please make sure you check this out for yourself, since I cannot confirm all the information that I learned.
