San Carlos Street of Lights

December 17, 2011

Everyone knows the great street in San Carlos on Eucalyptus. It is closed to one-way traffic at the moment. If you would like to see this street now is the time, when it gets closer to Christmas, it is almost impossible to get down the street.

These are the homes on Eucalyptus that have a great display. However, San Carlos does have other homes that are on Arroyo, Cordilleras and other streets as well.

Please come by and see the San Carlos light show…

Seniors Being Targeted Lottery Scam

December 3, 2011

This is very scary and could happen to any of our family members or friends. Please take the time to talk to your seniors that are close to you. On December 1, in the middle of the afternoon at the San Carlos Trader Joe’s,  a woman in her 70’s was returning to her vehicle after shopping at Trader Joe’s in San Carlos.   She was approached by two Hispanic males who offered to let her take part in a large draw from a winning lottery ticket if she would give them some good faith money.  Although hesitant, the lady was coerced into the vehicle driven by both suspects and taken to her home in Redwood City.  The victim went into her home and retrieved a large amount of cash and gave it to the suspects.  She was  then driven to the corner of El Camino Real & Madison Ave. in Redwood City where she was dropped off and the suspects drove away.   The victim called her daughter to pick her up and told her what happened.  They then reported the crime to the Sheriff’s Office.

The suspects are described as follows:
#1 – Hispanic male 60-70 years old, 5’5”-5’7” tall, stocky build, wearing glasses
#2 – Hispanic male 20-25 years old, 6’0”-6’4” tall, thin build, short black hair
Suspect vehicle – White full size newer model van with a sliding door and windows that wrap around the entire vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to make families aware of this type of crime that frequently targets elders.

Families are encouraged to talk to their seniors about these types of predators and the warning signs that they are being victimized.

Big Picture Charter School

November 6, 2011

Big Picture Learning is an established charter high school organization that will be submitting a charter in just a couple of months to the Sequoia Union High School District. This high school option will soon be available to the families of San Carlos. It is a charter high school that has a mission similar to San Carlos Charter Learning Center. Their approach to learning is offering a project-based learning environment with opportunities for real world learning experiences that CLC also offers its learners.

Big Picture Learning is an organization that was founded in 1995 with the establishment of the first MET High School in Providence, Rhode Island. Big Picture School has 67 schools nationwide and has been growing ever since.

Big Picture Learning believes that high school graduates must know how to reason, problem-solve, and be active members of the community. At Big Picture Learning schools, there is no canon of information that all students must know. In a world where available information is growing exponentially, we believe that the most important thing a student needs to know is how to learn. Integral to the Big Picture Learning design are the five Learning Goals, a framework for looking at concepts, skills, and abilities and help guide the creation of personalized student curriculum.

There is an informational meeting taking place on Thursday, November 10, 2011 from 5:30-7:30 PM, at the following address:

Holbrook-Palmer Park Pavilion

150 Watkins Ave.

Atherton, CA 94027

I hope that you will be able to join me at this exciting event and to learn more about a great new high school opportunity coming to the Sequoia District.
