Weather in Belmont

The best time of year for Belmont weather is the spring. We are in a special spot between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay which keeps Belmont weather relatively cool in the summer and mild the rest of the year.

But what about the so-called microclimates we hear so much about?

For those of you who live and work in Belmont it may come as no surprise to find the temperature in one part of Belmont completely different from another. These so called “microclimates” exist all over the Peninsula but in some cities such as Belmont, they can be found within the city itself.

With the micro-climates…in the 1860’s, William Ralston picked an area in Belmont to build his home located near the downtown section of Belmont, yet secluded inland far enough away to be protected from the colder San Francisco Bay winds, this area today is known for its superior microclimate.

Other microclimates can be found elsewhere such as in the hills overlooking the bay. These higher elevations are affected also; by more exposure to the wind and their altitude. Referred to as the “lapse rate”—for every 1,000 feet in elevation, temperatures are around 3.5 degrees lower. So it stands to reason that a home up in Belcrest Gardens near Highway 92 would be cooler than a home in Sterling Downs; but it’s not just elevation that accounts for the differential in temperatures. Microclimates created by the shelter of a hillside, ravine or eastern exposure can create a protected environment free from the cool afternoon wind which can drop temperatures as much as 20 degrees in the course of just a few hour…

San Mateo City Street Closings for May Day

April 30, 2011

Thirteen cities in San Mateo County are closing their streets to cars this weekend and opening them to walkers, bikers and other revelers.

The second annual “Streets Alive” will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday across the county and will include events ranging from exercise and dance classes to picnicking and play.

Last year’s event was held in April to coincide with the World Health Organization‘s 2010 open spaces-themed World Health Day, organizers said.

Pounding rain kept most of the crowds away, so the county decided to hold this year’s event in May, said Eric Pawlowsky in the office of county Supervisor Carole Groom.

Although the public is “thrilled at the idea” of opening up the streets, officials don’t know how many people to expect with the weekend’s sunny forecast, Pawlowsky said.

“People love the idea of having a safe, car-free place to walk and to bike,” he said.

Four new cities signed on this year to participate in the event, which is relatively inexpensive to stage because most of the services are donated and only existing infrastructure is used.

Pawlowsky said the county expects to continue holding Streets Alive on an annual basis, but officials hope the yearly gatherings will encourage individual cities to block their streets to cars more often.

The participating cities are Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, North Fair Oaks, Pacifica, Redwood City, San Bruno, San Mateo and South San Francisco, Daly City and Millbrae held their events in April.

More information about the individual city routes is available at http://www.streetsalivesmc.org/

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

Shore Dogs Park Redwood Shores

February 3, 2011

This is a great park… especially since you don’t have to have a leash to have your dog there. Shore Dogs Park is a completely fenced “off leash” dog park with a double-gated entrance to an area for large dogs and another area for small dogs. Benches, drinking water for dogs and doggie waste bags and dispensers are available. Shore Dogs is open for use from dawn until dark. During the rainy season, however, be advised that the park is subject to closure without prior notice at the discretion of the Park and Recreation Department and the Shore Dogs Board.

For information on closure due to rain call 650-654-6538.

Shore Dogs is located near the end of Radio Road in Redwood Shores, California, near a corner of San Francisco Bay, where during the spring and fall migration season, you can watch the shore birds.
