Our Belmont Greek Festival is this weekend at the Holy Cross Church on Alameda in Belmont. Fabulous entertainment for old and young. 3 full days of activities, great food and even a “fun zone” for children. One of my special orchestra’s will be performing on Sunday, Sept 4th at 5 in the Amphitheatre. Please come and hear this wonderful orchestra. Sept. 3 & 4, Noon to 10 and Sept. 5th, Noon to 8.

Movie Night In Belmont

It looks like the city of Belmont and the Belmont Library will host the annual “Movie Night in the Park” event on Friday night at the Twin Pines Park meadow. With San Carlos doing the movie on Friday evening, it looks like we will have a choice of movie places to go and attend.

This year’s movie features “Horton Hears a Who!” and will start at dusk — approximately 7:45 p.m.

The Belmont Farmer’s Market is located at the CalTrain parking lot at El Camino Real and O’Neill Streets. You will be entertained by local live music.

There is an extra bonus of $5 when you purchase at least $10 in EBT/CalFresh tokens at the Farmer’s Market. If you do receive food stamps, just bring your EBT card to the famer’s market every-time you shop. You can purchase tokens from the market manager that is in the bright yellow shirt. This is available until September 30, 2011.

Congregational Church in Belmont Hosts Rummage Sale.

Come to the annual rummage sale at the Congregational Church of Belmont the first weekend in August. They will take use of 2 stories. This is the largest rummage sale in San Mateo County. They will have a paid pre-sale on Friday, Aug 5th 5:30-8:30 for $10 and you will receive a $5 voucher to be used to buy merchandise.

The main sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6, with a bag sale from 3 – 4 p.m.

Sale merchandise will include antiques, books, clothing, children’s clothing and equipment, toys, electronics, furniture, linen, jewelry and art. Refreshments will be sold in the dining room.

San Carlos will pay new firefighters 7.5 percent less

The San Carlos City Council has agreed to pay firefighters who join the city‘s new department in October an average of 7.5 percent less than current ones. Well, I guess because they are new-bees and we are trying to protect our city and cut costs. A good way to start a job though.

In May the council decided to pay new firefighters 5 percent less, but on Monday night it voted 4-1, with Bob Grassilli dissenting, to cut the pay even more. The 2.5 percent difference in salary will save San Carlos an additional $75,000 a year, according to city officials.

San Carlos’ fire service costs should drop from $7.1 million a year to $6,078,107 after its joint department with Belmont dissolves in October and is replaced by a “hybrid” agency run by Redwood City, said administrative services director Rebecca Mendenhal. San Carlos chose to go its separate way several months ago after Belmont refused to pay a larger share of operating expenses.

In addition to paying firefighters lower salaries, San Carlos expects to save money by shedding its own command structure and avoiding some duplicative equipment expenses.

Firefighters hired to work for the new department will receive an average base salary of $85,092, among the lowest on the Peninsula, according to a city analysis.

Grassilli said he voted against a 7.5 percent salary drop because he fears firefighters would bolt to higher paying departments as soon as they get a chance.

I want to thank those that are willing to even be in this job with the risks and what they have to go through… I for one and grateful.

Twin Pines Park will transform into a series of free music festivals for the whole family to enjoy, and as Belmont Park Boosters spokeswoman Judie Davis says, “Dancing on the grass is encouraged!”

Congratulations Carlmont High Schools graduates. On Friday, more than 500 Carlmont High School students graduated on the school’s football field in front of hundreds of parents, friends and relatives to end a milestone in their lives and more on to other challenges, schools and experiences.

Belmont Tightens Up with Seat Belts

Beginning Monday, the Belmont Police Department will launch intensive enforcement of seat belt laws as part of a national “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

A first-time ticket costs — at a minimum — $142, and at least $445 for a child under 16, according to the Police Department.

More than 140 local law enforcement agencies as well as the California Highway Patrol are participating in the campaign, which starts Monday and continues through June 5.

Passengers riding in a car at night are among those least likely to buckle up, police say, which makes them the most likely to die in crashes when unrestrained. Nationally, of those killed in nighttime crashes in 2009, 62 percent were not wearing a seat belt. Due to that fact, Belmont police say they will focus their efforts at night.

Authorities say California’s current seat belt use rate is at an all time high at 96.2 percent, which is due in part to the Click It or Ticket mobilization. The campaign is credited with increasing the state’s adult seat belt usage from 92.5 percent in 2005 to 96.2 percent in 2011.

In 2009, seat belts saved approximately 12,713 lives nationwide. In California, it’s estimated that 320 people who were killed in 2009 would be alive today if they had been wearing seat belts, police say.

California’s Click It or Ticket campaign is paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
