Belmont Carlmont Tree Lighting
November 27, 2010

A little side history of the Belmont Tree Lighting Ceremony that we have every year. The lighting of the Christmas tree and the caroling by children represented by local public and private schools is a continuing tradition since 1974 where the tree was proclaimed the city’s official Christmas tree November 10, 1975. We sponsor this event and give a donation as a thank you to the schools that participate in the tree lighting known as “The City of Belmont Tree”. The festivities include an arts and craft boutique with Santa mingling amongst the crowd giving candy to the children. This is our way of sharing the spirit of giving during the holiday season.

More Than You Wanted To Know About Thanksgiving
November 23, 2010
Thanksgiving Day, known informally as Turkey Day, is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving was a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to God, family and friends for which all have been blessed of material possessions and relationships. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. This holiday has since moved away from its religious roots.[1]
In the United States, Thanksgiving Day falls on the fourth Thursday of November. In Canada, it is celebrated on the second Monday in October.
The precise historical origin of the holiday is disputed. Although Americans commonly believe that the first Thanksgiving happened in 1621, at Plymouth Plantation, in Massachusetts, there is strong evidence for earlier celebrations in Canada (1578) and by Spanish explorers in Florida (1565).
Thanksgiving Day is also celebrated in Leiden, in the Netherlands. A different holiday which uses the same name is celebrated at a similar time of year in the island of Grenada.

PG&E Completes Review of Gas Line in San Carlos; Community Meeting Upcoming
On Tuesday, October 26th, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) announced that it has completed its investigation of the 105-foot segment of high-pressure gas transmission line located on Brittan Avenue in the vicinity of El Camino Real in San Carlos.
The segment had been ranked on PG&E’s top 100 highest risk gas transmission pipelines because of engineering concerns about the materials used for construction.
PG&E stated that they have completed their investigation and resolved their concerns. The segment has been removed from PG&E’s top 100 highest risk gas pipelines list.
The City’s Public Works Department is now planning a community meeting with PG&E to be held in mid-November to answer resident questions and concerns. More details on the community meeting will be announced once the meeting has been finalized.

A great start to our holiday season. I love this song. Just click on this link and enjoy!
This is spectacular! The Hallelujah Chorus has hit the Macy’s Parade. On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation’s “Random Acts of Culture” at Macy’s in Center City Philadelphia. They planted the singers amongst the crowds throughout the Grand Court at Macy’s. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ – the world’s largest pipe organ – the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “Messiah” at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers.

Recycling Grease for Thanksgiving?
November 10, 2010

I found this great site from the California Association of Realtors site….Recycling cooking grease, especially if you’re a fan of those giant turkey fryers, is a better option than clogging sinks and sewers. One use for the goo is powering biodiesel vehicles. Type in “cooking oils” at www.earth911.com to find recycling centers. it is a great site for many other choices for recycling the “hard” stuff.
