New Bike Path in Belmont
December 27, 2009
The City of Belmont will commence construction of and bicycle overcrossing of US 101 in spring of 2010. The proposed overcrossing will allow bicyclists and pedestrians to cross the freeway on a trail and bridge that is completely separate from the roadway. The trail begins at Hiller Street and Ralston Avenue, crosses the freeway just to the north of Ralston Avenue, and connects to the Bay Trail at the Belmont Sports Complex.
The project has received funding from the American Recovery Reinvestment Act (stimulus money) and SAFETEA-LU, the State, the Bay Areas Air QualityManagement District, and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The City has secured grants from many sources due to the projects merit and support that it has received. The result is that the use of City of Belmont funds for this project is unusually low, at less than ten percent. The project will not only improve and encourage pedestrian and bicyclist use, it will create jobs for the region and encourage the economic recovery.
The project has been in the planning phases for many years, and there was extensive public outreach and community input in its development. The curved appearance of the bridge railing is even inspired by drawings completed by Belmont school children.

Redwood Shores Great Lights!!!
December 25, 2009
I have been watching this beautiful home with their decorating. This really makes Redwood City really proud to be included with Redwood Shores. You have to drive by this one!
Award winning each year here in Redwood Shores (Redwood City). This year our theme is “The Christmas forest” and we feature a 16ft tall tree containing over 5000 LEDs in 3 colors (Red, White, Green). Its fully animated to 15 songs and is roped off by hand made sleigh rails also wrapped in lights and garland. This year we added “leaping arches” to the front of the yard that are also in sync to the songs. The tree also sprays snow from the integrated snow machine the week before Christmas. We broadcast our show 7 days a week on 89.5FM and also play it outloud on the weekends.
Shows run M-Th 5pm – 11pm and Fr-Su 5pm – Midnight.
Candy canes always available!
One of San Carlos Holiday Home Winner
December 24, 2009
| 2009 is San Carlos 11th year of the best Christmas displays & lights in California. The winners in San Carlos feature 4 homes this year. All of them on Eucalyptus. This one is 1962 Eucalyptus. One of the best things about this street is that you can just park your car and enjoy the walk. But, beware…just after Christmas all the lights start coming down. The street is only one way, due to traffic. | |

Starting around 6:30 we’ll be out there with hot chocolate (and
schnapps!) and cookies. Stay for a few minutes or for the length of
the light show (40 minutes in a continuous loop)… We are at:
1944 Arroyo Ave
… Can’t stop by?? Drive by and tune your FM radio to 107.5… You
can now hear in the comfort of your car!!
We’ll be running the show (sans hot chocolate) through NY Eve, if we
don’t see you tomorrow!!
Happy Holidays from my neighbors the Hoffmans.

Best Holiday Lights in San Carlos
December 13, 2009
If you and your family are looking forward to the holiday lights from any particular street. It is well worth your while to visit Eucalyptus it is spectacular. What a gem! Even at 10pm, the lights were still up (and no crowds on a Thursday). I think I prefer the home-spun displays over the city organized stuff. Just feels more Christmas-y.
WATER DOG LAKE LOOP TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS
December 9, 2009
The City of Belmont is working in partnership with local volunteers to realign the Water Dog Lake Loop Trail. The improvements will make the trail easier for hikers to navigate, especially during wet weather. There is an existing trail that goes around the lake, but it was built below the high water mark which makes it diffi cult to pass in spots, even for hiking. Thanks to a diligent group of volunteers andBelmont Parks and Recreation staff, the new trail will be a minimum of 15 feet above the waterline of Water Dog Lake, which will allow year round use. The existing trail along the far west end of the lake will be re-vegetated to improve the quality of the wetlands. In addition to realignment, the project includes four small bike/pedestrian bridges, which will assist users to cross drainages and the spillway.
So far volunteers have finished realigning half of the trail, but the remaining half and the bridges need additional work. When the realignment is completed the trail will be above the high water mark, and wide enough for strollers, which will make it a great destination for hiking, biking, and family outings.
To volunteer and help finish the improvements contact: Passion Trail Bikes Belmont Parks and Recreation 650-620-9798, 650-595-7441 or email patty@passiontrailbikes.com parksrec@belmont.gov
Belmont Beautification Award Delayed
December 8, 2009
Hi everyone, due to the seating of a new City Council at the December 8th City Council meeting, the City of Belmont will be rescheduling the 3rd Annual presentation of our Beautiful Belmont Awards Program to the meeting of January 12th. This recognition program is designed to acknowledge individuals, businesses, and community groups who have enhanced the City’s community by making significant exterior improvements to their Belmont properties. Eligible improvements include the enhancement, upgrading, reconstruction, or replacement of a property, making it more visually appealing as well as enriching the surrounding neighborhood or district.
The City encourages everyone, including property owners themselves, to submit nominations throughout the year. The deadline for 2009 nominations has been extended to November 30, 2009, given the new presentation date. Nomination forms must include the property location, a brief description of the improvements that have been made and how it has made an impact on the surrounding community. Before and after photos are appreciated, but are not required.
A Judging Committee will review the nominations and select properties which best demonstrate pride in Belmont’s community. Winners will be recognized at the January 12, 2010 City Council meeting.
For more information on the Beautiful Belmont Awards Program, or to obtain a nomination form, please call the City Manager’s office at 595-7408 or look on the City of Belmont website at www.belmont.gov.
Santa Arriving on Cal Train
December 5, 2009
Santa to Arrive on Caltrain Holiday Train Dec. 5 and 6
Santa himself will make a pre-Christmas visit to the Peninsula on board the Caltrain Holiday Train this weekend. The jolly old elf will stop at nine stations to see who’s been naughty or nice. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Claus and an entourage that includes Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.
Good little boys and girls can make points with Santa by bringing a toy to donate to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program and the Salvation Army. Last year the Caltrain Holiday Train received more than 5,000 toys and books – up 27 percent from last year’s toy count of 4,179 – and nearly $2,250 in cash donations from visitors to the stations. Since the first Holiday Train in 2001, more than 40,000 gifts have been generated by the Holiday Train for needy Bay Area children.
Each evening kicks off with a live performance at 4:45 p.m. before the train departs the San Francisco station at 4th and King streets at 5:20 p.m.
The train will stop at four Peninsula stations each night. Entertainment at those stations will begin 30 minutes before the train arrives.
