San Carlos School District Update
January 15, 2009
Hi All, for those of us interested….. I’ll also post this on my calendar for a quick reference.
Central Multi-Use Room
January 20 7:30 P.M.
- Reducing our current year budget by a total of about $800,000
- Cutting our 2009-2010 budget by another $340,000.
- Reduce a portion of our categorical (restricted) funding.
In June, when we adopted our current budget we were told we would receive a 5% increase in funding for the state for the 2009-2010 school year. The current proposal revokes that increase, which amounts to an additional $800,00 in cuts from our current school district budget. When we adopted our current budget in June, we were told we would receive an increase in the 2009-2010 budget of 5.02%.
At next Tuesday’s special meeting, staff will bring to the board a recommended list of reductions for our district budget. We will do our best to keep the cuts as far from the classroom as possible. However, as you know, the district already operates with a very lean budget and extremely low administrative overhead.
Even though we are over half-way through the current school year, the state budget is still a moving target. The ultimate budget adopted in Sacramento may be different-possibly even worse than the Governor’s proposal-but state law requires school districts to adopt our budget in June based on the proposals put forth by the Governor at this time.
Support the San Carlos Educational Foundation (www.scef.us). Now, more than ever, their efforts are vital to our educational program.
Again, I want to emphasize that none of us wants to eliminate programs, reduce our staff,or in any way jeopardize the education of our students.. The alternative may well be fiscal insolvency. We need to focus on doing the best we can for our students and model resiliency, optimism, and the belief that things will improve. We need your help to succeed.
