Sparkler Christmas Tree

December 27, 2008

1d15eb513f63700d98cd0bde4f11369c2Wow, I couldn’t resist this one and not post it. This man uses a sparkler to create a Christmas tree of lights! I thought I was creative, but this would be a good way to have some burnt body parts. Happy Holidays to all of you!

1962 Eucalyptus Lights, SC

December 24, 2008

If you haven’t had the chance yet, take your family and go down Eucalyptus Street in San Carlos. It is really a treat, it is like being in wonderland. And, just a couple blocks away, Arroyo Avenue isn’t bad either, especially Mary Jo and Keith Hoffman’s musical light show.

San Carlos entered it’s 5th year for the Holiday Homes Contest for the best outdoor lights. Here is the website with an interactive map, so you can see the map of contestants. The holiday ornaments are the actual winners and if you
click on it you will see a picture of their home. The only mistake is the home on Arroyo with the dancing musical lights, the home of Keith and Mary Jo Hoffman is not on Club. Go to:

1726 Vera, RWC Lights

December 21, 2008

This display is lit from 6:00 till 10:30 and the last night is January 1st.  This family has a  sparkling globe above the reindeer that is a tribute to all there friends and family members that are no longer with us.

San Carlos Lights 1953 Eucalyptus Ave.

December 20, 2008

One thing I find unique about this street is that every single house, except 1 house for the entire two blocks is decorated. Also, since the houses on the street were built primarily in 50’s, it gives the street a very homey, quaint feel. On Saturdays and Sundays many of the residence of the street sit in their driveways with fire pits and socializing. A stroll down this street affords one the opportunity to have their picture taken sitting with the Grinch on a bench, aside a SUV pulled by lit up reindeer, behind Santa dreaming of Costa Rica come January and a with the backdrop of a house with the effect of snow falling.

Spare What Day?

December 16, 2008

OK, I am trying to save the day and not use my furnace as much, so I get a lot of wood so I can keep warm in at least one room of my house. Then, when the spare the air day started, (which, I totally get by the way), I tried to start a fire 3 separate times, when I realized I have to have the news on, or call someone or whatever, because I don’t know if I can have a fire or not???

Well, after all this, I now subscribe to the sparetheair.org…alert, so it comes on my phone in the morning, so I am PREPARED. Since I wanted to share all this with you…here goes…

Spare the Air Program

The Winter Spare the Air season runs from November 1, 2008, through February 28, 2009. This winter, for the first time in the Bay Area, it will be illegal to burn wood, pellets, or manufactured fire logs when a Winter Spare the Air Alert is issued.

Follow these links for more information on the Air District’s wood-burning regulation, and instructions on how to comply.

In the wintertime, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) becomes the pollutant with the greatest impact on air quality. Fine particulates can bypass the body’s natural defenses, penetrating deeply into the lungs and even passing into the bloodstream. Prolonged exposure to the fine particulates in wood smoke has been linked with aggravated asthma, lung and heart disease, and increased mortality rates. Wood burning in fireplaces and woodstoves creates about one-third of the winter particulate matter air pollution in the Bay Area.

When our morning forecast predicts that concentrations of PM2.5 will exceed the national health-based standard, the Air District will issue a Winter Spare the Air Alert. Winter Spare the Air Alerts will be posted on our Spare the Air home page and on the Air District’s www.baaqmd.gov home page.

Winter Spare the Air Alerts will also be recorded at
1-877-4NO-BURN (1-877-466-2876)
. Residents and businesses can also call this phone number to:

  • Report wood smoke concerns in their area.

In the meantime stay WARM!

Do The Green Thing

December 13, 2008

I have been running into a lot of people asking me about being GREEN! So, I decided to throw some stuff out there. There are a lot of simple, low-cost ways to improve your eco-score card. Here are some low-stress steps to take around the house to reduce your carbon footprint, create a healthier home and lower your monthly bills.

1. Bring your own bag when you go grocery shopping

2. Compost your leftovers

3. Use recycled paper

4. Turn the water off when brushing your teeth

5. Use and re-use rechargeable batteries

6. Unplug electronic devices when not in use

7. Use compact florescent lights

8. Keep your car tuned up

9. Limit car idling

10. Do your laundry after 7:00 pm; use cold water and hang dry if possible

11. Plant a tree

12. Bring your own coffee mug to your favorite coffee shop

13. Buy second hand clothes

14. Use your own newspaper to clean the windows

15. Recycle everything that the recycle bin will take

16. Buy electronics that have the Energy Star logo

17. Install low flow shower heads

18. Walk, bike or use public transportation instead of driving

19. Trip-link! Combine your errands into one trip

20. Plant a garden and grow your own vegetables

21. Don’t turn up the heat – put on more clothes

22. Put a lid on your pot when boiling water

23. Reduce your use of hazardous waste by limiting use of paints, pesticides and fertilizers

24. Purchase carbon offsets to limit your carbon footprint

25. Buy products with less packaging

And, if anyone else has more ideas, I would love to add them.
